Abundantia Entertainment acquires the rights of best-selling YA book, ‘Along Came A Spyder’ by Apeksha Rao

Set to be adapted as a series under ‘Filters’ – the production house’s content vertical focused on Young Adults

Always in search of inspiring and insightful stories from a diverse range of genres, Abundantia Entertainment, producer of films and shows like Airlift, Toilet – Ek Prem Katha, Shakuntala Devi and original series like Breathe and Breathe: Into The Shadows announced that it has acquired the rights of Apeksha Rao’s best-selling young-adult book, ‘Along Came A Spyder’, which will be adapted into a multi-season series out of India.

The book, Along Came A Spyder is a young adult thriller about seventeen-year-old Samira who is smart, sassy, and whose only dream in life is to follow in her family’s footsteps and become a spy. Leading missions, running agents, evading exploding napalms – she wants to do it all while dealing with the coming-of-age pangs on her budding youth. When she accidentally discovers there exists a sisterhood of teen spies called ‘The Spyders’, Samira will do anything to get in and thus begins the fast-paced and riveting adventure by the debutante author Apeksha Rao.

Abundantia Entertainment constantly endeavors to be audience-focused in its approach to tell inspiring and relatable stories. A segment that is yet to be explored to its full potential in India is the Young-Adult (YA) genre. To bridge the gap between the growing youth, who form a significant part of today’s audience and this genre, Abundantia Entertainment has launched the YA segment focused ‘Filters’. This would be Abundantia Entertainment’s second project under this vertical since their announcement of acquiring the rights of the hit Israeli YA drama, ‘The Missing’ which is presently under scripting.

Vikram Malhotra, Founder & CEO Abundantia Entertainment says, “YA is a clear and distinct priority for Abundantia Entertainment. And we want to tap into every possibility to create insightful and engaging stories for the Indian YA segment. Apeksha’s brilliant and evocative book, Along Came A Spyder, is a step in that direction. I’m excited about the possibility of building an Indian home-grown YA franchise for this under-served segment”

Author Apeksha Rao says, “Seeing my characters come alive on-screen is definitely a very exciting feeling and I am truly excited that Abundantia Entertainment along with The Story Ink will be seeing this journey through. Along Came a Spyder is a fast-paced, thrilling adventure revolving around a teenager and her grit and determination to pursue her dream of becoming a spy. I’m positive that the youth will thoroughly enjoy this adaptation.”

Sidharth Jain, Founder & Producer of India’s leading Book to screen company – The Story Ink, says “Abundantia was our first choice to partner with for Apeksha’s book and we are delighted that our first collaboration with them focuses on building a strong YA franchise based on Along Came a Spyder”.

Shikhaa Sharma, Head Creative & Development, Abundantia Entertainment added, “Apeksha’s book is a seamless fit into the profile we are creating and building for Filters. Her book has been a roaring success and it has all the elements to make for an engaging and compelling watch for the YA audience segment we aim to reach with this show.”

Kavita Krishnamurti Subramaniam released Hum Dono album with nine songs composed by Dr. L Subramaniam

The album Hum Dono is a collaborative project of Kavita Krishnamurti Subramaniam and the music has been composed by Dr. L. Subramaniam. There are nine songs in the album featuring male singers – Pt. Jasraj, Hariharan , Sonu Nigam, Suresh Wadkar and Lucky Ali with Kavita Krishnamurti. It was digitally released recently to celebrate love and its beautiful essence through music. We are releasing a video of Tum ho kahan with Sonu Nigam and the video for other songs will be subsequently released.

Kavita’s message –

This is an album that got started when I recorded two songs for my husband Dr L Subramaniam just around the time I married him in 1999. Both the projects got abandoned but I liked the songs and then requested my husband to compose some more songs so that I can have a complete album.

I really looked forward to it as I knew it would be original and creative with a global approach. He was keen on making it a collaborative album with lots of duets with leading male vocalists. Everything seemed to fall into place. He had worked with Sameer ji earlier, so we requested him to write some of the songs.

After our marriage, we were greatly privileged when Javed Akhtar Saab wrote Tum ho Kahan as a wedding gift. How kind and generous of him.

I wanted my husband to meet Sri. Ravindra Jain, whom I greatly admire as a composer and poet. Ravindra Jainji blessed us by writing the lyrics for two songs – Mitwa re and Samarpan.

It was a great honour and blessing to have Sangeet Martand Pt. Jasrajji sings a fabulous alaap in the song Mitwa Re. Jasrajji and LS shared a great bond in music and performed together on many occasions in India and abroad.

When we recorded Saawan Saawan (sung by Hariharan and me, written by Sameer Anjaan), LS thought of doing a trilogy – a set of three songs that will somehow be linked to each other, bringing out the philosophy of life that nothing is permanent – everything is a passing cloud so we should utilise available time in a positive manner.

The first song – Saawan Saawan – is about the meeting of two people who then fall in love. It is a simple romantic song.

The second song Tum ho kahan (sung by Sonu Nigam and me, written by Javed Akhtar) comes at a point in life where one partner in the marriage calls out to the other, who seems to have more time for the world and less for the relationship. The heroine keeps saying “Main hoon yahan…” and ‘I will come whenever you call me…’ whereas the hero says, “Jab tak ye tan man hai, tab tak hee bandhan hai. Bandhan nahin rahenge kal apne darmiyaan!” If you don’t give time to your loved ones, it might be too late some day.

The third song is Mitwa re. Here the relationship has come to an end. The heroine sings, “Mitwa re, milan apna sapna. Beeta kal huye bekal. Jaane kahan tu basaa!” The male voice is in the background indicating the loss of a partner.

The other songs are all individually recorded as standalone songs. Each song has its own sentiment and the final song Samarpan (written by Ravindra Jain), underlines an aspect of the truth of our lives.

This album is a collaborative effort and many people have contributed heart and soul in making this happen. It has been a long journey, spanning more than two decades, to complete this album and I’m grateful that I have been allowed to stay in music through these years. I want to thank all the great musicians who have kindly lent their voices to my album. Various other musicians have contributed for different tracks and my thanks to all of them but I would especially like to mention with gratitude Tausif Akhtar, Jim Satya, Sanjay Wandrekar, Premik Russel Tubbs, and Deepak Walke.

While he has been to Dubai a lot of times, “Zindagi Ki Mehek” fame Sidharrth Sipani’s trip this time is for a different reason. The actor is in the city on a five-day trip to celebrate his friend’s birthday. Though this trip is for a special occasion, he confessed that being a shopaholic he will indulge in a lot of shopping there. “This is my seventh trip to Dubai. It’s my friend Rahul Tater’s birthday on March 2, and we will be celebrating it here. It’s a five day trip and a much-needed break after the pandemic and lockdown situation in the country. Dubai is neither too far off from India, and the COVID condition is a little better here,” he said. “I am a self-confessed shopaholic and I am going to make the most of my time here. All the shopping that I couldn’t do because of the pandemic and the lockdown, I am going to do it now,” he added. Since Sidharrth has been to Dubai a couple of times before and has never missed an opportunity to visit the Burj Khalifa, this time he plans to stop by a lot of shopping malls. “This time I am going to explore all the shopping malls here. I will also be visiting The Walk and Smoky Beach at JBR,” he concluded.

Himansh Kohli’s sister Disha married, actor says it was a simple affair, following all Covid-19 norms

Himansh Kohli sounds both emotional and happy talking about his sister’s marriage. Disha, a baker by profession, tied the knot with Abhay Malhotra, a businessman, on February 28, in Delhi. There were a series of functions that was organised following Covid-19 norms, shares the Yaariyaan actor.

“I was in high spirits for my sister and made sure all the preparations were perfectly done, after all it was a very important event of her life. But to be honest I was feeling a tad bit of other emotions as a brother too. That she will be leaving us someday is something we knew would happen, but you are never prepared for it,” says the actor.
Kohli continues that as a brother he was excited because his sister was starting a new phase of life. “That’s there but I’m missing my sibling a lot. She has taken the next step in life and has new set of responsibilities and priorities, which I completely understand. But I miss ourc endless conversation, fights and all the attention from her. Guess now I have to get used to this feeling,” he adds, wishing the world’s happiness to his sister and brother-in-law. He also can’t stop talking about how beautiful and content they looked on the wedding night.

The first function, Mehendi was on February 27, followed by ring ceremony in the evening on the same day. The next day was the wedding with a humble gathering of near and dear ones.

“We had planned everything out in a way that every norm is followed to the T. We could not host many people given the pandemic. There were lesser functions planned unlike earlier times when it used to be a week-long affair and entire house would be filled with friends and relatives. May be after we all get back to those older times, we might organise a bigger gathering. But for now we can’t take the risk,” he shares.

‘Girls Will Be Girls’: Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal’s first Indian production at Berlinale Script Station; challenges taboos around sexuality

One of Bollywood’s most loved couples Richa Chadha and Ali Fazal have recently turned producers and started their own creator’s lab. The work on their first project has commenced. While Fazal has been the lead in the Hollywood film ‘Victoria and Abdul’ alongside dame Judi Dench and will be seen in Kenneth Branagh’s magnum opus ‘Death on the Nile’ later this year. He is also a member of the Academy. Richa Chadha too has traveled with her films to Cannes and been on the jury of international film festivals at Marrakech and Nara, Japan.

Their newly christened company ‘Pushing Buttons Studios’ aims to tell stories rooted in the Indian ethos for a global audience. The first script to be produced and is currently in the pitching stage under their banner is titled ‘Girls Will Be Girls’ and is written and will be directed by debutant Shuchi Talati. ‘Girls Will Be Girls’ is the only Indian script invited to the prestigious Berlinale Script Station 2021 – a lab that selects only 10 projects from around the world each year. It is also the only Indian project at the Jerusalem Script Lab this year where it will be presented formally at the Jerusalem Film Festival in July. Previously, Ritesh Batra’s second film, Photograph, had also participated in the same programme.

The film is set in an elite boarding school in a small Himalayan hill town in the North of India. It follows the story of sixteen-year-old Mira, whose sexy, rebellious coming-of-age is hijacked by her mother who never got to come-of-age. Mother and daughter grow up together through the course of the script and their fraught but ultimately loving relationship is the beating heart of the film. Talking about the film, Richa Chadha tells us, “The world that Shuchi has created is relatable, often cruel but never hopeless or nihilistic. Its honest awkwardness will make you chuckle, not weep. It’s full of relatable, lived-in episodes that one finds oddly satisfying – like popping a zit. The mother in our story routinely dodges the self-sacrificing stereotype of the typical Indian mom – she’s complicated, grey, and not a martyr. The dynamic between mother and daughter is so under-explored in Indian and world cinema that the possibilities of ‘Girls Will Be Girls’ presents are very exciting.”

Ali Fazal tells us, “This is the first time that Richa and I are collaborating on a film as producers and the experience so far has been very rewarding. This film being our first is close to our hearts. I am also excited that our studio will enter the market with such a progressive, female-led story. We hope to be able to tell thought-provoking and universal stories with humor and love”

The writer and director of the film, Shuchi Talati is an Indian director based out of New York. “I like my work to challenge dominant narratives around gender, sexuality, and the Indian identity,” she tells us. Talati won the prestigious New York State Council of the Arts Grant for the script of ‘Girls Will Be Girls’ which is a development fund. She has also been selected for Berlinale Talents and her most recent short film, ‘A Period Piece’, premiered at SXSW Film Festival in 2020. The short will be playing as part of the Seattle Asian American Film Festival from March 4-9th 2021 and will also be available to stream in the US during that period.

Shuchi and Richa first presented ‘Girls Will Be Girls’ as part of the NFDC’s Film Bazaar co-production market, where they found like-minded producing partners in Sanjay Gulati from Crawling Angel Films, Delhi and Claire Chassagne of Dolce Vita Film, France.

Crawling Angel Films, under the aegis of Sanjay Gulati and Pooja Chauhan, has a track record of producing groundbreaking, award-winning films from the subcontinent which have played at premiere festivals the world over including Berlinale, Rotterdam, Busan et al.
Claire Chassagne of Dolce Vita Films will also be a co-producer on ‘Girls Will Be Girls’, thus turning the film into an Indo-French co-production venture. Dolce Vita has previously produced Partho Sen Gupta’s Sunrise’ in India which played at Busan and Tribeca Film Festivals. Their recent film ‘A Son’ by Mehdi Barasoui premiered in Venice Orizzonti.

Shuchi and Richa have been longtime collaborators. They co-directed a documentary about adults living with autism and Down’s syndrome while they were students at Sophia College in Mumbai as an assignment. As Richa became an actor and Shuchi became a director, the two remained close friends and often talked about making films together. Richa tells us, “In my opinion, Shuchi is an amazing voice and I’ve been following her evolution for years, knowing that one day an incandescent film would be born from her brain. She is definitely a filmmaker to watch out

Actors opine about the good and bad of the TRP business on TV

There have been constant talks around how content on TV requires a revamp. What adds to the worry, according to many, is how similar concepts and storyline are being followed by channels and show makers to gain TRPs. In fact, they go to any extent to hold high ratings and that often affects the quality. However, there are others who feel that TRP thing on TV isn’t new and it often gets the best out of people. Audience always wants something new and both producers and channels try and live up to that expectation. Here’s what actors have to say about the entire TRP driven game:

Ajay Singh Chaudhary
While Friday’s and box office decide the fate of films, TRP drives the TV business. The storyline is changed at the last moment and sometimes even unrealistic tracks are introduced just to grab viewer’s attention. By unrealistic I mean a dead person being brought back or what happens in some supernatural shows… But at the same time creative liberty is the order of the day. We are dream sellers, entertainers and need to satisfy the varied demands and liking of the viewers. So I think there are both good and bad of TRPs.

Kettan Singh
Daily Soaps are evaluated weekly on the basis of television rating point or TRP. If the track is not getting good ratings it’s changed and another twist in the plot is introduced to get the audience back. We have to understand if a show doesn’t do well then that affects its longevity and at the end of it affects the livelihood of every single person attached to it. Whenever a show ends earlier than expected imagine how many people lose their jobs. So I don’t blame the channel or makers.

Mohit Daga
As actors we should not be thinking about TRPs, rather our job is to give our best performance. I believe creative changes are done to experiment with tracks and see what works and what doesn’t. There’s nothing bad in that because TV shows must live up to the TRP standard to survive. If a show does well, more viewers mean more ads and more revenue generation. But yes that doesn’t mean we can go overboard just to top the charts.

Avinash Mukherjee
Daily soaps don’t have stories planned for a longer time. Here things change every day. The growing competition and demand leads to people try different things, work on deadlines and extra hours. So coping with TRPs given the format TV follows isn’t difficult. When a track does well we all enjoy the success but when it doesn’t we end up saying how the TRP driven format has a bad effect on content. Rather than complaining I think we all should work towards following a healthy competition in order to get TRPs without compromising on the content. After all in today’s time, you need to keep your audience hooked with both quality and quantity.

Mrunal Jain
My job as a performer ends at enacting my part convincingly in front of the camera. For actors, creative satisfaction matters more than anything else. At the same time we can’t forget that we are in the show business. Only when a show works and earns better revenue, it runs for longer period of time providing employment to many. And the profit helps producers and channels make new shows which employs more people. So TRPs matter. However, that cannot be an excuse to compromise in quality because after all this is a creative field.

Farnaz Shetty
I don’t think TV is governed by TRP but yes it is one of the integral parts. I feel in the hope of gaining more viewers and TRPs, producers and broadcasters work towards introduces many twists and turns in the plot to figure out what sells and what doesn’t. Writers and creative heads do spend sleepless nights. To be honest, apart from the art of it, we all are here to make money as well. And I agree all these often affect the quality of content. But as an artist one can’t do much about it.

Yo Yo Honey Singh shot for this special number, composed, sung and written by the rap star with his protégé Hommie Dilliwala, for two days in Mumbai last year with John and Emraan.

Talking about the song, singer-composer Honey Singh shares, “This has been one of my best compositions and I’m excited to collaborate with Hommie for this song. We kept the theme of the movie as the essence of our music and wanted to give audiences a song that is catchy and groovy. Thanks to Bhushan Kumar and Sanjay Gupta who understood the vision of the song and made it into a great video. It was a pleasure sharing the screen with John and Emraan. Rajeev Surti choreographed some cool moves & I am looking forward to know how every one like it.”.

Bhushan Kumar says, “We have a long standing equation with Yo Yo Honey Singh and I wanted a song that summarises the theme of the film. Out of the few songs Honey made me heard, this song I loved the most. I am glad Sanjay also liked it. The song is catchy and we’re here, releasing the song today.”

Ravi Dubey, Nia Sharma & Achint Kaur Spill some beans on working with “the actors’ director” Aarambhh M Singh in the show ‘Jamai 2.0’

The original leads Ravi Dubey, Nia Sharma&  Achint Kaur in the series, shed some light about their experience of working with director Aarambhh M Singh & how he is actors’ director and gets into every little thing that is part of his frame whether it’s the actors clothing or it is art and set design. He is very precise and particular towards his work & that makes him all over perfect.

Ravi Dubey:   For me  it has been a terrific experience working with Aarambhh. This is the first time that I’ve had the opportunity of working with him. Aarambhh is someone who is really an inclusive creative person, and that translates as a director as well. He is someone who has an open mind about every scene. He used to often say that I know that  there are actors who are directors actors, but I’m an actor’s director. I think that’s something that’s absolutely amazing about the statement. This is what truly makes him an inclusive creative and because he is this way the environment on the sets is really very warm. Aarambhh makes sure there is always  that potential to push the envelope and go the extra mile in a scene which may not always necessarily be a part of the script. So to say there’s always that window to create a new kind of magic with the scene. So that I think this is Aarambhh’s biggest strength. And he is not only a director, I’ve also enjoyed his company as a friend and I am glad to have met him during Jamai 2.0.

Nia Sharma: Working with Aarambhh  M Singh has been pretty smooth, more than taking his name that’s pretty tough. But I would say what is easy is how he lets you be, and gives you the space as an Actor. He just lets you be, lets you flow unless you go wrong somewhere. He does not complain about anything. That’s the best part when you can actually be at ease with the director he really understood me on a lot of levels. He was particular about my look, my costumes. He was constantly right there you know, talking to me about things, constantly boosting my moral through the entire show. So I would say overall it was fantastic and I definitely look forward to working with Aarambhh again.

Achint Kaur :  Yes about working with my director Aarambhh. So we  met for the first time on the show and what I like about Aarambhh is that he is a very sensitive person and that really comes across. When he is directing the scenes, you get to learn a lot. He sees the intrinsic part of every scene and he is super committed. He gets so involved at times I feel that Aarambhh why didn’t you do the scene for me and make it simply beautiful. So this one thing I really like about him. Otherwise he is a great gentleman & a beautiful person. Loads & loads of blessings to him.

Jamai 2.0 Season 2 is one of the most popular and long-awaited web series, and fans are eagerly waiting for their favorite couple, #SidNi to return to the screen. The sequel in the form of Jamai 2.0 continues from the cliffhanger where it left off the last time to make some big revelations.

Director Aarambhh M Singh’s second season builds a relationship with lifelong trials centered on romance. Aarambhh has kept the spice and ‘mystery’ alive till the very end which will make viewers want to binge watch the show till the climax. The transition of episodic series format from daily soap has been done for the better and with the unexpected twists and turns happening one after the other in a jiffy, it keeps you hooked to the screen till the very end.

A tribute to Kishore Kumar & Madhubala: Ek Ladki Bheegi Bhaagi Si remake ft. Ajay Keswani & Urvashi Rautela out now

Well-timed in the middle of the spring season, Cool Lip Music in Association with White Billionaire X Beyond Music brings the remake of Ek Ladki Bheegi Bhaagi Si. The original song that was helmed by legends Kishore Kumar and Madhubala has a special place in our hearts. Celebrating both the evergreen artists, producers Viral Motani, Pakkhi Hegde & Manoj Lakhiani present a reimagined version of the song.

Written and directed by Varun Prabhudayal Gupta and with music by Vicky-Hardik, the newly released song has been sung by renowned singer, Ajay Keswani and it features him along with the popular actress, Urvashi Rautela. The remake has been tastefully shot in the scenic Al Qudra Desert and evidently, the makers left no stone unturned to make the ode to the legends a grand one. The music video captures sunlit sand dunes, a vibrant festival party, a bathtub in the desert, and an underwater sequence.

Singer, actor and multi-instrumentalist, Ajay Keswani says, “Ek Ladki Bheegi Bhaagi Si is an iconic song that has withstood the test of time and feels fresh every time I hear it. New music video called love jihaad starring payal Ghosh is out and it’s making a lot of news

Payal Ghosh starrer love jihaad is out now and it’s caused a huge uproar. The song which is seen by a section as something against intercaste marriage is actually not that totally. We saw the video and it’s about some of the Muslim men fraudulently marrying a Hindu girl and trying to convert her to their religion. This is a truth of the society how much ever we try to hide that. The song is being critiqued as well as accepted due to its brave portrayal of the situation. Payal Ghosh has taken a bold step and she is not one to shy away from the challenge.

We got in touch with her and here is what she has got to say, “It’s a song where a muslim boy pretends to be hindu and marries a Hindu girl and then tries to convert her to their religion. It’s not about unacceptance or something that some sections are making it out to be. It is a ground reality and we can’t shy away from it. The cases are in thousands if not lakhs. It’s a bold attempt and we all have to stand by it to make it a success so the larger message goes out. Love jihaad is getting misunderstood and I request the media to come into play and give out the true essense of the music video.”

Payal is a brave woman. She has faced it and seen it all and she is standing headstrong. We admire your courage girl.
